Class Information

Breastfeeding Class
Designed to take during the last trimester of pregnancy, this class provides expert educational information to support women and their partners in learning about breast-feeding their babies (the art and science of breastfeeding). Practical information and discussion will cover: learning how to breastfeed (i.e., latching and positioning), the benefits of breastfeeding/breastmilk, mother’s personal care and nutrition, how to deal with common breastfeeding difficulties, breastfeeding tips for working mothers, breastmilk pumping and storage, and other common issues. Husbands/partners and supportive persons are encouraged to attend. This class is taught by a certified Lactation Consultant.

Newborn Care
Designed to take during the last trimester of pregnancy or just after baby is born; this class provides evidence-based information about how to care for your newborn in the early weeks. Parents and caregivers will learn about newborn health, behavior and development, basic care, family adjustment and postpartum adjustment and recovery for mothers and family members. This class will also cover guidelines for selecting a pediatrician (& what to expect in the first year of pediatric care of your child), common newborn health/medical concerns, nursery preparation, and feeding choices. This class is open to all expectant parents, adoptive parents, grandparents, caregivers, and other supportive persons who would like to prepare for the new baby. This class is taught by a prenatal educator and an UHealth Board-certified Pediatrician.
A tour of the UHealth Pediatric Medical Practice will be given during this class (and meet and greet/Question and Answer session with the Pediatrician).

Childbirth Preparedness Class
These sessions will focus on the important issues that expectant parents face in preparation of their new baby. Expert information will be provided by a UHealth Physician (obstetrician) and nurse to inform expectant parents and support persons about pregnancy, labor and delivery, and anesthesia options. This class is designed to be taken during the last trimester of pregnancy, with one support person attending with mother, if able. An optional tour of the delivery suites will be provided after this class session if parents are expecting to deliver their baby with one of our UHealth Obstetricians at the Women’s Hospital Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
